Why Hawaii is hard on blinds
Three conditions here punish window coverings in ways that a product spec written for a national market does not anticipate.
Ultraviolet intensity rises roughly 4% for every 1,000 feet here. The Kona and Kohala coasts get sun on almost every days a year. Bargain vinyl yellows, unstabilised fabrics fade unevenly, and real wood on a west-facing window can bow as the sun-facing face dries faster than the shaded one.
Humidity stays high year round, and salt-laden trade moisture arrives in July. Wood moves through that cycle. Kiln-dried basswood moves least, which is why quality blinds are built from it.
Daily temperature swings of 30 to 40 degrees are ordinary here, which stresses adhesives, finishes and mechanisms far more than a stable climate does.
This is why we specify UV-stabilised composites and solution-dyed fabrics on high-exposure windows rather than selling the same product for every opening. Read more in our complete guide to window blinds.
Hawaii blinds questions
- What blinds work best in Hawaii's climate?
- Faux wood and quality aluminum, for most windows. Hawaii's combination of intense tropical UV, humidity that never really drops and salt in the air is hard on materials: real wood can bow on hard western exposures, and bargain vinyl yellows within a few summers. UV-stabilised composite handles all of it.
- How much do custom blinds cost in Hawaii?
- Aluminum mini blinds are among the least expensive window coverings available; premium stained hardwood on a large opening costs several times that, with faux wood in between. We quote per window after measuring, with a line-item breakdown so you can adjust room by room.
- Do you install blinds outside Kailua-Kona?
- Yes: Waikoloa, Waimea, Kohala, Hawi, Kealakekua and the Mauna Kea and Mauna Lani resorts are all inside our regular service area, with no travel charge.
- Are your blinds cordless?
- Every blind we sell is cordless as standard. There is no cord loop and nothing hanging within reach, which is the right choice in any home with children or pets and is now the industry norm.
