The coffee belt has a daily rhythm most of the year: clear mornings, cloud building through the afternoon. It is what makes the coffee good and it changes what a window treatment is for.
The hard afternoon glare that dominates on the coast is far less of an issue a few miles uphill. Morning sun through east-facing glass matters more, and for a lot of Kealakekua houses a light-filtering shade is sufficient where a coastal house would need a tight solar screen.

Damp is still the thing to design around
Cloud cover and elevation mean humidity stays high. It is not Hawi, but it is a long way from the dry heat of the Kohala coast.
Real hardwood blinds are still a risk here, particularly in bathrooms and on the windward side of a house. Composite and synthetic remain the safe specification, and we would rather say so than sell a hardwood blind that looks lovely for two years.
Natural woven woods, which suit this landscape aesthetically, need care. If you want that look, ask us for the composites within that range rather than the true natural fibres, which do not enjoy this much moisture over a decade.
Older homes on sloping ground
A good share of the housing here is older, built into a slope, with rooms on different levels and windows that reflect several eras of alteration.
The practical consequence is that a house often has four or five different window sizes and two or three different opening types. We measure everything individually rather than assuming a house has a standard, and we will tell you where an outside mount is going to look better than trying to fit an irregular reveal.
Sloping sites also produce a lot of rooms with genuinely different exposures, so we specify per window rather than per house. It is more work at the consultation and it is the difference between a house that feels considered and one that feels ordered from a list.
